In the north of the island you find small rocky bays and, from Kendwa to the north-west part of Nungwi, a gorgeous stretched sandy beach. As the tides here are very weak and there is no coral reef, you can swim all the day long in the sea.
Nungwi is a small fishermen‘s village, in the past well known as a dhow boatyard. Now it has changed into a busy touristic area, nicknamed „Jambo Square“, very popular with backpackers. The northeast part of Nungwi is depending on the tide and more quiet, here you find some upper class hotels.
In the village a small aquarium with sea turtles has been created. The aquarium is a natural rearing-pond with seawater for small turtles found on the beach until they are large enough and then released to survive in the sea.
Kendwa, formerly a tranquil and peaceful place is now famous for its Full Moon Parties.
